“The Rap Genre is Dead”: Nigerian Rappers Clap Back at Wizkid’s Claim

Nigerian singer and songwriter Wizkid caused controversy on social media platforms by declaring that the rap genre is dead during a recent interview. Several Nigerian rappers, including Blaqbonez, Ajebo Hustlers, and Erigga, clapped back at Wizkid on Twitter, reminding him of their potential and criticising him for his comments. While Nigerian rap icon M.I. Abaga did not criticise Wizkid, he appreciated all the rappers who have been driving the genre forward and would like them to infuse more of their qualities. The reactions from Nigerian rappers have sparked debate on the state of rap music in Nigeria.
 
Wizkid, the Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter also known as Ibrahim Balogun Ayo, caused a stir on social media when he declared that rap music was dead. In an interview, he expressed his boredom with the genre and claimed that no one was doing enough to enhance it. Several Nigerian rappers responded to his comments. Blaqbonez reminded Wizkid of his own potentials while Ajebo Hustlers simply said they were not dead but stylish. M.I Abaga appreciated rappers who had done well in the genre and encouraged others to focus on improving their craft. Ycee expressed his disappointment in Wizkid and urged him to apologize to Nigerian rappers. Erigga criticized Nigerian rappers for not supporting each other. Cheque boasted of his versatility and announced the possibility of featuring Wizkid in his upcoming project. Ladipoe did not react to the controversy.
