Operatives of the Bauchi State Police Command have reportedly arrested a 19-year-old woman for allegedly abducting a newborn baby in the Misau Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect, identified as Hajara Usman, is said to be from the Ishehi Hamlet in Misau Local Government Area.

According to reports, Hajara Usman had an accomplice, an 18-year old man identified as Ibrahim Usman, with whom she conspired to commit the crime.

It was also learned that Ibrahim Usman is from the Dugurgama Hamlet in Bauchi State.

In a statement by the Bauchi State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, it was revealed that the newborn baby was abducted at about 4:30 am, as reported by the police outstation where the case was first reported.

Wakil explained that a resident of the Galawa Area of Akuyam District in the Misau Local Government Area, who happened to be the grandfather of the stolen baby, reported the incident to the Police.

He said the reporter visited the Akuyam Police Outstation to file a complaint that his daughter’s newborn baby was stolen at about 4:30 am, leaving the family devastated and with no clue on how to find the child.

Wakil stated, “On July 25th, 2023 at about 7:00 am, one Adamu Baka (55) of Galawa area Akuyam district of Misau Local Government area, reported at Akuyam outstation that at about 4.30 am, unknown persons intruded into his daughter’s apartment who recently gave birth and took away the newborn baby.”

He further added that upon receiving the report, a team of detectives was immediately mobilized and successfully apprehended the culprits.

“The stolen baby was recovered from Hajara Usman, a 19-year-old female from Ishehi Hamlet, who conspired with Ibrahim Usman, an 18-year-old male from Dugurgama Hamlet to steal the baby,” Wakil said.

Regarding the motive behind the crime, Wakil assured the family that the Police are committed to finding out why the suspects did what they did and that an ongoing investigation is taking place.

He expressed his disappointment with the incident and stated that the suspects will be profiled and charged to court for the established offenses once the investigation is completed.

Wakil also disclosed that during the investigation, the Police recovered a sack containing an AK-47 rifle with six rounds of live ammunition. The possessors of the rifle, however, managed to flee the scene when they saw the security agencies.

“On July 23rd, 2023 at about 21:30 pm, the Command’s detectives attached to Tulu Divisional Police Headquarters received credible intelligence from the village head of Sabon Garin Tulu about a suspected unknown person in the area.

A team of detectives went to the scene, but the suspected person fled upon seeing the policemen and escaped to an unknown destination.

He left behind a sack containing one AK-47 rifle, one magazine, and six rounds of live ammunition, which were subsequently recovered,” he explained.

Wakil concluded by highlighting the importance of community engagement and traditional intelligence gathering in police duties. He urged all officers to maximize intelligence gathering, as it is crucial in modern policing.
