Skelewu: The Music Video Controversy

Returning to the topic that inspired me to write – the Skelewu controversy surrounding its music video. Much like last year, Davido has arguably the biggest song of the year to his credit, with his Shizzi-produced “Skelewu” breaking records and topping charts worldwide without an official music video. Those in the music scene know that Davido initially hired D’banj’s go-to guy, “Sesan,” to shoot and direct a music video for the song, but he later felt it wasn’t worthy of the song’s caliber, so he decided to re-shoot with Mr. Moe Musa without making a big deal about it.

After a concert in Sierra Leone, he excitedly tweeted that he was off to London to shoot “Skelewu (The Movie)” with Mr. Musa, only to find out that the video he did not approve had been leaked online. After expressing his frustrations on Twitter, he was labeled the “immature bad guy.” However, Davido released the official video on the promised date, and while it was criticized, it was still a solid video worthy of the song.

Some articles criticized the video and labeled Mr. Moe Musa as a “creative thief” for allegedly plagiarizing LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem.” Despite the controversy, the video was exclusively premiered by MTV U.K. and the song has been successful on the charts, so who is really winning? Why all the hate and spite at Davido?
