The Department of State Services (DSS) has granted Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), permission for an independent medical examination. Kanu had been requesting access to his personal physicians since his detention two years ago, which the DSS had previously denied. However, a federal high court recently ordered the DSS to grant Kanu access to his chosen doctors. Kanu’s lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, confirmed that Kanu underwent a medical examination at an unnamed hospital in Abuja and that he will be progressing to the next stage soon. In unrelated news, Adamawa state governor has imposed a 24-hour curfew due to widespread looting and attacks by hoodlums.
 

The Department of State Services, DSS, has finally granted Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, his request for an independent medical examination of his health condition.

This is the first time the IPOB leader would be meeting his personal physicians since he was detained by the DSS two years ago.

Kanu has since his arrest, requested access to his personal physicians, a request the DSS either turned down or gave deaf ears until a federal high court sitting in Abuja in a recent development, ordered the DSS to grant Nnamdi Kanu access to medical records and doctors of his choice.

Delivering judgment, the presiding judge, Binta Nyako, dismissed the objections raised by the DSS for lacking merit.

Kanu’s lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, said the IPOB leader underwent a medical examination in an unnamed hospital in Abuja on Friday.

According to a statement by Ejiofor: “We are pleased to inform you that Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu met with his choice personal physician yesterday (Friday) in a hospital in Abuja, outside the facility of the State Security Service (SSS).

“As part of the protocol, I witnessed the consultation. The medical examination was seamless and productive, and he (Kanu) will be progressing to the next stage soon.”

Kanu has been in custody of the DSS since June 2021, when he was arrested and repatriated from Kenya.

While in custody, Kanu repeatedly asked for an independent medical examination of his health condition.

In a another story, Adamawa state governor, Ahmadu Fintiri has declared a 24-hour curfew on the state with immediate effect.

The governor made the declaration in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Humwashi Wonosikou on Sunday in Yola.

According to the statement, the curfew was necessitated by wide scale looting and attacks on citizens by hoodlums which the governor assumes is taking a dangerous dimension.

He appealed to law abiding residents to comply with the directive, warning that anyone caught contravening the order would be arrested and prosecuted.

“With the curfew imposed, there will be no movement throughout the state.

“Only those on essential duties with valid identification would be permitted to move around during the period of the curfew,” Fintiri said.

Hundreds of hoodlums had broken into Federal and State government storage facilities and looted food and non food items in Yola, the Adamawa state capital, according to NAN.

Speaking, the Head of Operations of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr Ladan Ayuba said that the armed hoodlums looted bags of Rice, Maize, Corn and Beans, as well as Generators, wrappers, mattresses and plastic buckets among others from NEMA facility.

Mr Ladan added that the hoodlums who attempted to break into a Silo but were not successful, went on to vandalize and loot other facilities that were recently reconstructed and furnished at the NEMA office.

In a face off with security operatives, atleast three of the hoodlums were believed to have died while several others were arrested.

SP Suleiman Nguroje, the Police Public Relations Officer in Adamawa confirmed the incident, saying that Police and other security operatives have been deployed to protect critical assets and infrastructure.
