South African Afro-pop singer, Bulelwa Mkutukana, also known as Zahara, has passed away.

Zahara, who was hospitalized, died on Monday night due to liver complications.

She had been in a Johannesburg hospital, reportedly with liver issues.

In November, Zahara’s family confirmed her hospitalization.

The country’s Minister of Sport, Arts & Culture, Zizi Kodwa, expressed sadness over the singer’s passing, saying, “Government has been with the family for some time now.”

“My deepest condolences to the Mkutukana family and the South African music industry. Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact on South African music,” Kodwa added.

Zahara, who released five albums, was named on BBC’s 100 Women list in 2020 and won several awards and recognitions.

The late artist revealed in 2019 that she battled alcohol addiction.

As of now, the family has not released any statement.
