Yoruba Culture Influenced Me Naira Marley Opens Up About Childhood

Naira Marley, a Nigerian rapper and singer, has revealed that his fluency in the Yoruba dialect is due to his father’s decision to ban speaking English in their London home. He explained that growing up in South-East London, which he compared to Lagos, allowed him to immerse himself in Nigerian culture. He developed a passion for Nigerian street music and embraced the country’s culture, including listening to Fuji music and eating African foods. Naira Marley feels that his upbringing in London did not hinder his connection to Nigeria and that people were surprised to learn of his background.
 

Nigerian ace Rapper and singer, who is popularly known as Naira Marley has disclosed why he speaks Yoruba dialect fluently despite growing up in London.

He made this revelation during his recent interview with Cool FM where he disclosed that his father was the pinnacle of the astonishing outcome.

According to his revelation, during their stay in London, his father banned them from interacting in the English Language. This assisted in sparking his passion for the Nigerian culture which he embraced.

He further outlined that he is so obsessed with Nigerian culture and has never regretted his father’s choice.

His words:

“What made it easy for me [to blend with Nigerian street music] is that I grew up in South-East London, Peckham to be precise. That is like small Lagos, you know what I mean?”

“And all my life in England, my dad banned speaking English in the house. So, we had to speak Yoruba and all these Yoruba stuff. I still listen to Fuji. We eat African foods. Even though I’m in England, it was like I’m still in Nigeria. Yeah, it was easy for me. When I came back [to Nigeria], people didn’t really know I came from London.”
